Evolution of a GIS Data Clearinghouse: From FTP to Web Services
Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure
Author(s): Maurie Kelly, Ryan Baxter, David Walrath

Since 1996, Pennsylvania Spatial Data Access (PASDA) (http://www.pasda.psu.edu), the public geospatial data clearinghouse for Pennsylvania, has been the primary resource for locating data in the Commonwealth.

The recent growth of PASDA has been exponential. PASDA now includes thousands of datasets and has evolved from an FTP site to a user-centered interface, the Data Wizard, accessing data via database queries and state-of-the-art Esri-based map and Web services.

This paper will focus on the development of advanced services and applications on PASDA--resources that take advantage of the latest software and serve as a model for the advancement of the NSDI.

Demonstrations of services including PennCAT--a catalog of Internet map services-and applications such as the NOAA ForecastMapper and Tropical Depression Ivan Viewer will be discussed as will the development process of the Data Wizard that involved a complete restructuring of the data, database, and user interfaces available through PASDA.
