California Statewide Rail Right-of-Way and Abandoned Rail Corridors Evaluation
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Sean Lehman, Andrew Ittigson, Diane Pierzinski

California has more than 7,500 miles of railroad lines served by passenger and freight trains that represent a critical component of the state's transportation and distribution systems. Transportation corridors that might hold promise for future plans can be forever lost when abandoned rail right-of-ways are sold. The California Department of Transportation, which oversees the state's rail lines, sponsored this project to create a comprehensive rail database.

The goal of the study was to identify the location and status of all rail corridors in the state and evaluate their relative importance and potential for future rail passenger service. In addition, the study identified abandoned rail corridors with the potential for use by nonmotorized transportation and as links to improve access to public transit.

This presentation will show how Nelson\Nygaard Associates--a transportation planning firm--utilized ArcGIS to populate the statewide rail database and conduct an evaluation of the state's rail corridors.
