Calgary Fire Department's Reduction of Risk Through Strategic Station Planning
Track: EMS/Fire
Author(s): Bruce McBride

With migration and new residential structures rapidly rising in Calgary, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) is planning for the future by utilizing GIS data and known risk factors to better analyze the demand against CFD's supply of resources to reduce risk through future station and apparatus strategic planning. Utilizing GIS, CFD identified areas of risk to explore ways to better deploy its fleet of emergency response apparatus. One approach was to update future growth trends and known risk to exhibit communities and districts in need. Other datasets utilized for planning based on community needs were proximity loss, oil and gas locations, hydrant and tanker analysis, fire flow, historical fire loss, MVAs and medicals, and adequate apparatus coverage to help determine available or best suited lands.
