Sacramento County Regional GIS Cooperative Streamlines Street Network Data Maintenance
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Cynde Porter

Emergency dispatching, transportation routing, and address matching are perhaps the most central, vital tasks of any well-developed GIS. At the heart of these applications lies the street network, where data currency and accuracy is imperative. Sacramento County and several regional agencies have come together to develop a new Street Network Data Portal to coordinate an information management and distribution service for use by all local government entities. This cooperative has now fully developed a Web-based viewer and editing tool based on Esri's ArcIMS technology to collect and manage address range information systems, facilitating communication and alleviating the complexity of data upkeep in a distributed intranet or Internet environment. Innumerable staffing hoursonce spent on data quality control and multiagency coordination can now be directed to real-time data editing and determination of proper addressing essential for maintaining information critical to accurate geocoding, E-911 dispatching, and emergency operations.
