Map and MXD Document Management "on the Cheap"

Within high-volume work environments, the ability to find and access previous maps and files is essential. Quite often, just one person or group is the de facto reference for this type of information and is more of an "oral tradition" rather than written documentation. Once key personnel leave, this critical information can be lost forever, which in turn creates unnecessary rework.



This paper will describe an attempt to create and implement a relatively simple map and MXD document management system. Information is gathered using VBA and posted to a Geodatabase for storage. The information is then placed into an Access database, which contains an interface that allows both GIS and non-GIS users to view, query, and send e-mail about maps in the database.
