Abstract
Using GIS for Microwave Coverage Analysis Track: Telecommunications & Location-Based Services Author(s): Chris Hallford, Mehmet 'DJ' Kutsal, Steve Overacker Contra Costa County, located in Northern California, covers more than 500,000 acres. The terrain varies in elevation from sea level on three sides to Mount Diablo with an elevation of 3,849 feet and located approximately in the center of the county. Size and geographic diversity can create numerous obstacles when considering network connectivity with the traditional "land-line" methodology. Dealing with the very specific "line-of-sight" requirements of communication equipment can be a daunting task in planning and designing network changes and enhancements. Advances in wireless technologies will play a key roll in connecting the outlying areas of the county. This paper discusses the methodology used to locate microwave transmission and receiving equipment. ArcGIS and ArcGIS Spatial Analyst are utilized to develop the necessary data required for a viewshed analysis.
