Design and Implementation of the ArcGIS Wastewater Data Model
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Steven Russell Jr.

Erie County Department of Environment & Planning-Division of Sewerage Management (DSM) initiated a GIS program in 2002 with the goal of mapping all existing DSM assets and creating a database of asset information. As the database was being developed, the need to create a consistent scalable data structure became more apparent. Modeling Erie County's wastewater network with the ArcGIS water utilities data model was determined to be the best method to create the data structure.

This paper will demonstrate the obstacles, challenges, and rewards of setting up a wastewater data model from the conceptual stage to full-scale implementation and integration with other systems. It will demonstrate how the DSM built the model with UML and CASE tools in ArcCatalog, ArcMap and Microsoft Visio. It will detail how the ArcGIS water utilities data model can be used to integrate with future document management, work order, and computerized maintenance management systems solutions.
