Asset Management--Data Collection Technique Comparisons
Track: Database Design, Automation, and Management
Author(s): Tiner Thomas

This presentation will cover a series of asset data collection techniques currently employed to capture infrastructure features. To aid communities to comply with recent NPDES regulations, as well as to add to their enterprise GIS framework layers, several methods of data collection will be discussed such as photogrammetry, field GPS, and mobile data collection where a van configured with digital cameras, GPS, IMU, DMI, and other computer components is driven along all road segments within the community to capture a series of "smart" images. This PowerPoint presentation will include comparison discussions of costs, data collection accuracy, and rate of data gathering to capture road assets such as signs, manholes, inlets, fire hydrants, etc. Example of loading the data into ArcGIS will also be demonstrated. This data collection aids in compliance with NPDES, GASB 34, as well as supports a variety of other maintenance and liability concerns.
