Online Visualization of Potentially Flooded Areas Ising Esri Image Server
Track: Disaster Mangagement and Emergency Response
Author(s): Stefan Mayr

One of the apparent impacts of climate change is the increasing number of severe flood events in pre-alpine catchments in the years 1999 to 2005. For citizens, decision makers and local emergency management, it is of special interest to be informed about potential flood areas. A research project carried out by the Munich University of Technology examines the application of Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC)-compliant Geo Web Services and ArcGIS software-based hydraulic simulations to implement a Web-based information system: an operator-defined use of geospatial information about areas threatened by spates is provided. To achieve this goal, heterogeneous datasets (aerial photography, satellite imagery, land register maps, flooding areas) stored in distributed databases can be integrated via OGC-compliant Web map technologies. IKONOS satellite imagery of the investigation area is provided by Esri Image Server.
