Developing an Enterprise GIS Strategy for the UK Environment Agency
Track: System Implementation for GIS
Author(s): Rob Jones, David Rix

The UK Environment Agency makes extensive use of GI data across all its business areas and is used by more than 10,000 staff in 110 offices. There is also increasing dissemination of spatial data externally through a variety of services.

The challenges faced by an organization of this size include data versioning and data management. This situation was further complicated by infrastructure and physical network constraints along with significant datasets residing in legacy applications.

To address these challenge, the agency undertook a review of GI use and opportunities and defined a strategy and road map for achieving an enterprise-wide GIS implementation.

This paper will provide a definition of how the Enterprise GI Strategy was developed, the challenges to be overcome in the implementation of such a strategy, and how the principles of the strategy may be applied and used as a blueprint for other large organizations.
