Abstract
Implementing the TRU Method for GIS Track: Archaeology Author(s): Martin Goetz Using a survey technique called the TRU (Transect Recording Unit) Method and GIS software, archaeologists at the Fort Bliss Military Range are creating spatial data that is opening new methods of analysis and enabling previously unknown levels of data sharing between independent contractors. The TRU Method essentially maps large survey blocks as a grid of small 15 x 15 meter cells. The TRU is the smallest unit: the 15 x 15 meter cell. Artifacts in the field are recorded in the individual cells. At the end of a survey, these cells are loaded into ArcView and queried using previously determined site criteria to create sites. In the lab, cells can be queried and analyzed for purposes of predictive modeling, pattern recognition, and cultural/temporal affiliation. The cells as shapefiles become part of the deliverables to the client and become part of the larger spatial data for the entire Fort Bliss.
