Abstract
U.S. National Park Service Metadata Applications: Metadata System Overview Track: Parks and Natural Reserves Author(s): Chris Dietrich The U.S. National Park Service (NPS) has developed a servicewide metadata and data system called the NR and GIS Data Store System that integrates a Web-based data repository and a desktop metadata editor. The NR and GIS Data Store (Data Store) is a searchable, Web-based metadata and data clearinghouse that consolidates numerous NPS data distribution points and provides park units with Web services capabilities to publish metadata and data via their own Web applications. The NPS Metadata Tools & Editor extends Esri's ArcCatalog metadata editing functionality to meet agency-specific needs and prepare metadata for upload to the Data Store. The next generation of these applications will further extend ArcCatalog and integrate more closely using Microsoft's .NET technology to provide seamless editing and upload of metadata via securely encrypted Web transactions. The system streamlines metadata workflow, enhances metadata editing and provides valuable data services back to data producers.
