U.S. National Park Service Metadata Applications: Data Store
Track: Parks and Natural Reserves
Author(s): Christie McDonald

The NR and GIS Data Store (Data Store) application manages and shares natural resources and GIS metadata and data generated by the National Park Service (NPS). The Data Store is a Web-based repository that provides data producers with integrated metadata and data management and searching capabilities. The Data Store integrates with the NPS Metadata Tools & Editor, an extension to Esri's ArcCatalog that provides metadata editing and uploading capabilities. Version 1.0 of the Data Store runs ColdFusion against an Oracle database, utilizing CF Web services to return search results. User authentication and .SSL encryption is incorporated into the Data Store to ensure data security. The next version of the Data Store will utilize Web services and Microsoft's .NET technology to allow posting of records, provide real-time metadata uploading and editing, and return search results as an XML dataset to Web applications developed by internal NPS clients.
