Abstract
Health and Safety GIS Applications: An Example in INAIL Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): Silvia Severi, Piero La Pegna, Angelica Schneider Graziosi INAIL-The Italian Workers' Compensation Authority-pursues several objectives: the reduction of accidents at work, the insuring of workers involved in risky activities, and the reintegration in the labor market and in the social life of work accident victims. Doing so acquires and uses billions of data managed through complex systems of traditional database. For several years its Technical Advisory Department for Risk Assessment and Prevention (CONTARP) has been testing the possibility of using a GIS to manage information on risky activities. A successful application has been carried out analyzing data on thousands of activities involving the risk of exposing workers to crystalline silica. The paper focuses on the method used and the perspectives of extendomg it to other risks and diseases. Migration of data from different administrative sources to a unique geodatabase has not been a simple task, but it now allows us to have control of risky situations.
