Analysis of Nitrate and Atrazine Impacts on Groundwater Using GIS
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Anjana Sahay, Charlla Adams

A project for the Idaho Department of Water Resources examines the relationships between land use and groundwater contamination of shallow aquifers in the western Snake River Plain of southwestern Idaho. Statistical analysis tools are used to analyze temporal and spatial data of nitrate and atrazine, and the results are represented in ArcMap in graphical and tabular forms to provide to regional environmental quality managers. Even given the limited data available, the results suggest activities at the surface that are reflected in nitrate concentrations in underlying groundwater. ArcGIS proves useful in analyzing temporal trends of groundwater quality and monitoring land use and contaminant levels. The results and methods of this study can be applied toward land-use planning for this and other regions.
