Abstract
Modeling Karner Blue Butterfly Habitat in Wisconsin Track: Ecology and Conservation Author(s): Theodore Sickley, Emil Peter, David Mladenoff The Karner blue butterfly (Kbb) is a federally listed endangered species whose largest population exists across an area of more than 14,000 km2 in Wisconsin, USA. To comply with the U.S. Endangered Species Act in a relatively flexible manner, more than 35 public agencies, private companies, and nongovernmental organizations participate in a Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP). We used field survey data, broad-scale geographic datasets, and several statistical approaches to generate a spatial dataset of Kbb habitat probability to be used by HCP partners in evaluating potential impacts of their land management activities within Kbb range. Areas with highest probability of Kbb occurrence are identified, allowing HCP partners to target their field surveys most efficiently to those areas of Kbb habitat most likely to be impacted by their proposed activities, saving them the expense of having to survey entire project areas.
