Panama Canal Authority Uses LiDAR/Esri Technology for Cadastral Surveying
Track: Cadastral and Land Records
Author(s): Carlos Contreras, Steve Morris

The Panama Canal Authority undertook an enterprising effort to incorporate LiDAR technology to generate eight-bit digital orthophoto imagery for a 1,300-square-kilometer region west of the Panama Canal. These orthos provided cadastral surveyors with a visual cue that indicated approximate property locations and served as a backdrop for the cadastral survey data being populated into the authority's GIS. The final orthoimagery was delivered in a GeoTIFF format along with the associated Esri ArcInfo World Files. Additional data processing for the Authority to support its cadastral and planimetric layer creation was integrated into ArcGIS. This is likely the largest project of its kind outside of the United States using LiDAR technology and Esri products for the support of cadastral and planimetric mapping.

This presentation presents the unique methods used and final results of incorporating LiDAR techniques with ArcGIS for the cadastral and planimetric mapping program in Panama.
