Nation's Tenth-Fastest Growing County Successfully Implements Enterprise GIS Using ArcSDE
Track: GIS Organization, Management and Implementation
Author(s): Michael Morris, Jim Kiles

Paulding County, Georgia, part of northwest Atlanta, found that by seeking an enterprise-wide GIS, there occurred some conflict, but conflict quickly led to collaboration, and collaboration led to accomplishment. Paulding County's IT/GIS Department rallied five different departments--Public Works, Transportation, Tax Assessor, Community Development, and Public Safety--to conceptualize and build an enterprise-wide GIS in an Esri-based ArcSDE 9.1 environment with SQL Server.

Attendees will learn: (1) how Paulding County overcame human issues surrounding significant technology upgrades and changes in the way the county uses and shares data, which had the effect of changing how the county does business for the better; (2) the policy decisions and technical choices that were made to satisfy county leadership and data owners/users that data integrity and security would not be compromised; (3) why the quality of data quickly became important; and (4) the county's focus on the future.
