Eradicating Noxious Weeds and Obnoxious Shapefiles in Alaska Parks
Track: Parks and Natural Reserves
Author(s): Joel Cusick, Greg Daniels, Angela Southwould, Jeff Heys

To facilitate the management of nonnative plants in Alaska's National Parks, the Exotic Plant Management Team has been mapping infestations using Trimble mapping grade GPS receivers and TerraSync field software for three field seasons. Traditional workflow consisted of yearly updates to a nationwide data dictionary, multiple mapping teams collecting SSF files, editing in Pathfinder Office and export to shapefile format. Cumbersome file management routines appended these data for historical analysis. In 2005 we broke from the traditional field-to-office approach (SSF to shape) when encountering hundreds of data files and with the advent of the new capabilities of GPS Analyst, for direct transfer between geodatabase structures and data loggers. Alaska is moving forward in eradicating noxious weeds and at the same time culling out obnoxious shapefiles by housing data directly in GDB format in the office and SSF file format in the field.
