Abstract
New Technologies--Common Foundations for Desktop and Web-Based Applications Track: New Technology and System Integration Author(s): Danette Boezio EPA's Reach Indexing Tools (RITs) developed by RTI are designed to georeference data to the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) and create a standardized output that can be stored and used in EPA's centralized data repository. One of the applications is desktop based and the other Web based. This paper will explore the options for creating a core set of functionality in the form of Web services, .NET classes and Oracle procedures that can be shared between desktop and Web applications that have a common purpose and data platform. This would allow the specific code that supports the individual applications to be minimal and easy to update. The advantages of this architecture would include reduced development and maintenance costs, standardized functions, the ability to share or expose individual parts of the application to other applications, and the ability to meet the needs of the greatest number of users with available resources.
