Abstract
Web-Based Mapping of Vitamin A Distribution in Rural Haiti Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): Steven Obenhaus, Chris Welchhans Vitamin A deficiency carries high morbidity risk for children in developing countries, unless treated with preventative serial doses. Clinics in rural southern Haiti failed to reach a majority of children with consecutive doses. As a result, the distribution regimen has shifted to a program based on home visits by health workers originating at the Maison de Naissance birthing home near Larnage. The roads and villages of this previously unmapped area and the locations of patients' homes were recorded using global positioning system (GPS) devices. Home visit and clinic information are entered and accessed via Internet connection, allowing health workers in Haiti and volunteers in the U.S. to work side by side. Using ArcIMS, Web-based maps advance this real-time interaction by helping health workers identify concentrated areas of need. They are then able to plan visits in a manner that allows them to administer treatment more effectively. Steven Obenhaus Olathe North High School Earth Sciences 600 E.
