A Hydrologic Model for Every Continent
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Guleid Artan, Md Shahriar Pervez

Large areas of the globe have experienced widespread flooding in the last few years. Deployment of hydrologic models can reduce the human and economic losses in these regions by providing improved monitoring and forecast information to guide relief activities in the flood-affected areas. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has developed a hydrologic model to simulate stream flow and soil-water conditions. The model's hydrological components were developed using C++ and FORTRAN programming languages where the model graphical user interface (GUI) was developed by using Esri's ArcView GIS software. Model parameters are derived from publicly available georeferenced spatial datasets of topography, soils and land cover. The GIS-based GUI prepares the information contained in the geospatial datasets into input data files for model injection.
