Abstract
Using GIS to Determine Approximate Flood Hazard Areas Track: Water Resources Author(s): Philip Graff, Michael Schultz Community participation is necessary for the success of the National Flood Insurance Program. Detailed studies, performed by engineers, provide the best data for determining flood zones. However, performing detailed studies for every stream is cost-prohibitive. By using GIS to measure hydrologic and hydraulic attributes, approximate flood zone areas can be delineated in a cost-effective manner, thus allowing community participation and contributing to the success of the NFIP.
