Abstract
NOAA's Facilities and Asset Management GIS Track: Federal Systems Implementation Author(s): Thomas Simon, Will Freeman The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) conducts a wide variety of scientific operations at several hundred facilities throughout the United States and U.S. territories. In addition, NOAA manages thousands of sensors, tide gauges, antennae and other equipment for data gathering and analysis. NOAA is developing a multitiered GIS system for use in facilities and real property management, planning, security, and emergency response. This paper details the development and implementation of the system in a phased approach, integrating data from all NOAA line offices, and identifying GIS users at several management levels. ArcGIS serves as a valuable tool for integration of multiple data sources and distributing GIS functionality to geographically dispersed users.
