Bringing Geographic Information Systems Technology to the Classroom
Track: Education
Author(s): Carol McCoy

The city of Olathe is rapidly becoming one of the largest cities in Kansas. As the city has grown in size and population, so has the utilization of GIS technology. GIS resources in the city include custom PC and Web-based applications available to employees and citizens. Olathe North High School exposes students to GIS through instructor-led classroom activities and collaborative research projects undertaken as part of the school district's 21st Century and Distinguished Scholars programs. Over the past several years, the Olathe GIS Division has developed a strong relationship with the Olathe school district, (USD 233.) Our involvement with the school district has included the provision of in-service training, participation in the district's externship program and, more recently, the implementation of a high school internship program.
