Plots, Stands, and Prescriptions: A Forest Information Management System
Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
Author(s): Mark Joselyn

The Cedar River Watershed Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP), commits the city of Seattle, Washington, to land management activities designed to achieve the goals of accelerating the development of late successional forest conditions, restoring and sustaining natural processes, and protecting water quality.

Historic and ongoing data collections of forest condition have historically been stored in disparate databases managed by individuals. To properly manage and leverage this data through time, an integrated database for forest information was created for use by Cedar River Watershed staff. Major challenges included the integration of time and spatial location to support mapping. Unlike many forest land managers, Cedar River Watershed does not engage in commercial timber harvest but is focused on habitat restoration and accelerating forest development.

Thousands of historic and ongoing sample plots, incorporating tree; shrub; herbaceous; and down, dead wood measurements, are managed by the city's newly developed and spatially enabled Forest Information Management System.
