Advanced Enterprise GIS Asset Management Expansion:Municipal Government
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Timothy DeSalvo, Kirk McClurkin

The city of Newport News Public Works department leverages Azteca's GIS-centric asset management solution Cityworks. Cityworks, in conjunction with ArcGIS and ArcSDE, makes up the central, enterprise database that manages virtually all customer issues and maintenance related to public infrastructure. Public Works success in improving customer service, saving time and mitigating the rising cost besieging local governments has resulted in expansion across its municipal environment. This paper will focus on the technological enhancements and management changes that Public Works has addressed. The efforts and methods to gather additional physical infrastructure information for comprehensive GASB 34 reporting, asset management configuration, and establishing a mobile solution for the front line field professionals will be defined. Specific focus will be on the linkage between these efforts and industry best management practices imperative to serve our citizens, to further promote our national accreditation with the APWA and to continue our strides for excellence in the industry.
