Abstract
City of Las Vegas Geodatabase Design - Implementing an Enterprise Solution Track: Database Design, Automation, and Management Author(s): Anthony Willis, Elizabeth Marshall, Masao Matsuoka With 500,000 residents and 113 square miles, Las Vegas is the largest city in the U.S. founded in the 20th century, and one of the fastest growing metropolitans in the country. The City of Las Vegas is one of Esri's earliest adoptors, using ArcInfo since the late 1980s. Recently, the City implemented Hansen as its enterprise system. Integration between Hansen and GIS, creation of a spatial data warehouse, and migration to current ArcGIS technology became a priority. Led by the IT Department, the City's GIS users worked closely with professionals from Marshall to design a geodatabase that laid the foundation for both integration and migration. The geodatabase design takes advantage of ArcSDE, but also has built-in structures to allow effective synchronization between spatial and Hansen databases. This article summarizes the issues encountered and their solutions, the achievements, and the lessons learned during the enterprise geodatabase design process for a major city.
