Migrating to Embedded GIS and Wireless Computing
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Dee Thompson, Christopher Stern

Deploying timely map updates to mobile workers and receiving the associated field revisions are some of the most significant challenges of managing an enterprise water utility GIS. The migration of City of Phoenix Water Services Department (WSD) field crews to a wireless computing environment using embedded GIS technology from Esri illustrates the benefits associated with addressing this challenge.

Phoenix WSD provides utility services to the fifth largest city in the nation. During development of WSD's GIS Master Plan, the organization identified significant benefits in delivering GIS directly to and from mobile workers. A project was subsequently launched to implement a system to connect 450 field crews with GIS. Using a phased approach, WSD implemented Esri technologies, field service management software with embedded GIS, and wireless computing systems throughout the service area. This paper will describe the project drivers, benefits, technologies, technical and human challenges, and critical success factors.
