Abstract
GIS and Radio Telemetry: Tracking Rainbow Trout in Kings River Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management Author(s): Brian Tait, James Purpuro The Kings River downstream of Pine Flat Dam provides habitat for rainbow trout, produced within the river as well as from hatcheries. As a result of seasonal irrigation flows and other environmental factors, it has been extremely difficult to assess and evaluate the residency, behavior and movement patterns, habitat selection, and population dynamics of juvenile and adult trout. Radio telemetry provides the ability to monitor the movement of individual fish within a river system over a wide range of stream flows and environmental conditions. The Kings River Conservation District, along with partner agencies, serves as part of the Kings River Fishery Management Program and uses radio telemetry and GIS to study geographic distribution and movement and identify and analyze potential barriers or impediments, habitat selection preferences within the river including the use of gravel and boulder habitat enhancement projects, and mortality of juvenile and adult trout from the river.
