Abstract
Lessons in Geoprofiling Selected Crime Spots within Nairobi, Kenya Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Author(s): Sarah Simons The escalating crime rate in Kenya has drawn attention both at international and local levels. Increasing incidences of sexual assault are a distinguishable signature at crime scenes as violent crimes like carjacking, robbery with violence on public transport commuters, burglaries and muggings culminate in the inflicting of additional physical pain to the victim(s) through sexual assaults either by the individual assailant but more often by the whole gang. This includes raping of infants, juveniles, women and even unsolicited sodomy of men. Gender violence groups have identified notorious rape crime spots and posted "BEWARE OF HUMAN DOGS" signboards to mark these rape crime spots. Many are either within/close to public transport facilities. Using GPS and ArcView 3.2, basemaps of Nairobi were created. Selected rape crime spots in Nairobi will be geoprofiled to identify distinguishable patterns in the distribution of these crime spots vs proximity to public bus stops.
