Designing and Developing a Spatially Enabled Land Resource Information System
Track: System Implementation for GIS
Author(s): Steve Dicks, Diana Burdick, Steve Allenstein, Hossam Sayed

The Southwest Florida Water Management District works to balance the water needs of its current and future 16-county area users while protecting and maintaining natural systems. In support of this mission, the district has acquired more than 405,000 acres of land or land interests and is individually or cooperatively responsible for their management.

This presentation describes district efforts and lessons learned over the past two years in designing and developing an enterprise-scale, GIS-based information system to enhance the district's ability to effectively manage its land and land interests. This Land Resource Information System (LARIS) will provide a centralized data repository and a set of application services to support the storage, maintenance, analysis, and reporting of spatial and nonspatial land resource information. Database system components will be based on Oracle DBMS and Esri ArcSDE technologies, while application service components will be based on Microsoft .NET and Esri ArcGIS Desktop and Server technologies.
