Abstract
Using Shapefile XML to Create an Online Data Catalog Track: Metadata and Data Publishing Author(s): Brett Blankner The City of College Station uses a combination of the metadata provided in the shapefile's XML file and a JavaScript HTML Web page to generate a dynamically updated online data catalog. The Web page reads a directory upon loading and creates a list of compressed shapefiles available for download. It then reads the data tags in the shapefile's XML file and contructs a table describing the file and provides a link to download the compressed shapefile. This process encourages GIS staff to create metadata for the files and also turns updating our downloadable data into a drag-and-drop affair. This streamlines data availability and ease of updating.
