Abstract
GIS and Rural Transit Route Selection on Maui Track: Transportation Author(s): Kyle Ginoza Bus transit route selection in rural communities is especially challenging considering the low population density and limited available funding. Therefore, it is vital that rural jurisdictions rely on extensive planning prior to execution. The Maui County Department of Transportation utilized GIS to map various metrics of the typical transit rider. Using graduated variables such as income level and age, coupled with binary variables such as residency and disability status, the department was able to generate routes to better service the public. The results have been very favorable; the ridership has increased more than 150 percent in two years from FY 2004 (pre-GIS usage) to FY 2006. As the routes matured, the department has been able to increase usage through system tweaks based on feedback received through rider and nonrider survey data.
