GIS-Centric Large-Scale Transportation Planning Projects
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Angela Goodwin, Jaime Crawford

The design and planning of multibillion dollar regional transportation projects require communication and collaboration with the public, different government agencies, multiple jurisdictions, and multiple consulting firms. They also create an opportunity to find new solutions in organizing projects to ensure efficiency. In response, a GIS-centric project model has been developed and used as a management and communication solution for large-scale planning projects. A GIS-centric project model enables standardization of all spatial data among the design and planning team. This increases the efficiency of the project team, consisting of multiple consulting firms and local, state, and federal agencies, and aids key stakeholders in making quick and informed decisions by providing a rapid way to evaluate the different alternatives and visualize the impacts they have on the environment. It also gives a framework that can be used to integrate multiple projects into designs for the major transportation corridors.
