Creating Custom Map Legends Using ActiveX and Visual Basic
Track: Application Development
Author(s): Harold Bostic

The ActiveX Connector provides a wealth of information for programmers to develop functionality in a GIS Web client that extends beyond what is available in the standard HTML and Java viewers. However, one limitation of the connector is that it does not allow the developer to easily create a map legend that relates selected map layers to their scale-dependent symbols.

This paper will describe how the Coast Guard Enterprise GIS team leverages Visual Basic technology and the ActiveX Connector object model to combine map layer and map symbology information in one integrated map legend.
