GIS Support for Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi's Emergency Operations Center
Track: Disaster Mangagement and Emergency Response
Author(s): Richard Kotapish

This presentation will present a GISCorps volunteer's perspective on the use of geospatial technologies during this infamous disaster. Contrary to the media hype surrounding New Orleans, much was accomplished by this cadre of GIS professionals from the GISCorps, area universities and agencies. As the first GISCorps volunteer to arrive, Mr. Kotapish was drafted into service in the Jackson, Mississippi, EOC Control Room, focusing on logistics, interagency coordination and management of map production. Day-by-day accounts, lessons learned, technologies used and examples of map products and photos will bring the attendees a view from inside this calamity and address how we might better prepare for the next disaster.
