Abstract
The Egyptian Geography Network: A Step Forward Toward Sustainable Development Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure Author(s): Mohamed Misbah, Sohail El-Abd As the importance of geographic information in addressing complex issues facing the Egyptian Development is growing, the establishment of an Egyptian Geography Network to support the spatial data sharing nationwide is vital. Without a coherent Geography Network in place, there are inefficiencies in the use of geographic information nationwide. Furthermore, as spatial technologies are increasingly being used by diverse organizations in Egypt, a number of obstacles add up to a geographic information bottleneck such as lack of organizational coordination, data redundancy, information fragmentation, and incompatibility. This paper demonstrates the implementation of EGN as a metaportal through which spatial data nationwide can be discovered, accessed, and shared via the Egyptian GIS society. The paper discusses as well the EGN concept, components, stakeholders, architecture, and approach highlighting the strategy of avoiding cultural difficulties facing the national SDI implementation in the development countries. The paper ends with showing EGN future vision.
