MoDOT Transportation Management System (TMS) Viewer Desktop and Web Applications
Track: Application Development
Author(s): Tim Howerton

The Missouri Department of Transportation maintains a Transportation Management System (TMS) that uses Oracle to store transportation data referenced by log mile locations. GIS users are able to query the database and display data as route events. TMS Viewer was designed to simplify this process. On startup, it checks for updates, installs any upgrades, and loads predesigned layers and templates into a new ArcMap document. Custom ActiveX tools provide functionality to look up locations and analyze data. ArcGIS Server utilizes the same ActiveX DLLs in the Web version of TMS Viewer. Written with ASP .NET, the Web version provides a more practical solution for intranet users in remote locations as well as a future solution to serve GIS data to external Web users. This paper will discuss the VB6 coding techniques used to create the libraries shared by both applications and the Visual Basic .NET code used to access the server-side libraries.
