Abstract
Archaeological Mapping at Hierakonpolis Track: Archaeology Author(s): Joel Paulson Since 2003, we have been using ArcGIS to map the site of Hierakonpolis in Egypt. The site was known in ancient Egypt as Nekhen and was an important city in the development of Egyptian culture and kingship in the 4th millennium BCE. Archaeologists have been excavating at the site since the early 20th century but have used different datums and coordinate systems. By using ArcGIS, we have been able to reproject data from the earliest maps up to recent satellite imagery, combining them into an overall site map that includes earlier excavation data. More recently, we have created a DEM using satellite imagery and are incorporating it into the mapping and are using it for three-dimensional representations for tracing the history of this fascinating site.
