Abstract
GIS for Envisioning the Santa Ana River Watershed Trail Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Lisa Pierce A River Runs Through: When the Santa Ana River Trail was envisioned in 1915, no one could have imagined that it would take more than 100 years to complete. GIS is being used to help envision the last segments of the 110-mile trail stretching from the San Bernardino Mountains to the Pacific, in the Inland Empire of California. GIS is playing a role in helping regional groups envision and integrate watershed and wetland education into plans for interpretive areas along the trail. Health education and increasing stakeholder involvement in active trail use for improved health are also key components of this effort. The original vision of a tricounty trail concept has grown into a tricounty natural lands parkway. Various public agencies and stakeholders are advancing this Santa Ana River Trail concept. With the use of GIS, the collaborative opportunities for a virtual watershed-based vision is evolving.
