Building a Map as a Fish Sampling and Assessment Tool
Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management

The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment issues fish consumption advisories for chemically contaminated sport fish. We are using ArcGIS to make decisions about sampling and when to merge or separate data in the development of advisories for large water bodies with multiple sampling sites. As an example, we compiled data for Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta water bodies, using a relational database management system (MS Access) to merge multiple MS Excel files, saving the resulting file in dBASE format. A map displaying mercury concentrations in largemouth bass on the San Joaquin River was created using Esri ArcMap software, incorporating multiple attributes from fish data files with sample location and position. We added appropriate river and county shapefiles to ArcMap and brought in the dBASE file, using the latitude and longitude (X,Y) values to display sampling sites and chemical concentrations. This work has facilitated selection of target species and sampling sites.
