Geodatabase of California Plant Distributions
Track: Ecology and Conservation
Author(s): Joshua Viers

CalJep is a personal geodatabase that reconciles the two prominent electronic floras for California, providing users with access to geospatial distribution data for 7,887 species and subspecies of plants found in the state. Using 224 map units, taxonomic records are coded by four levels of confidence for each unit resulting in a unique geodatabase repository. This data is currently being used to study rarity and endemism for conservation purposes. Specialized studies are examining spatial patterns of riparian and serpentine obligates as well as exotic species. When combined with other geospatial modeling exercises and field data, this geodatabase provides a rich and invaluable data source to ecologists, biogeographers, and natural resource managers. This paper details the creation of the geodatabase and its operability within ArcGIS.
