Abstract
GIS for the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail Stewardship Program Track: Parks and Natural Reserves Author(s): Karen Kemp When complete, the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail will extend approximately 170 miles along the west coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. Since most of the trail will traverse private and state lands, a large number of trail stewards, each with responsibility for overseeing approximately three miles of the trail, will be identified. Trail stewards will be local schools, canoe clubs, churches, services groups or private landowners such as large resort hotels. To assist the National Park in involving this varied group of stewards in the necessary GIS data collection and management, a GIS infrastructure is being established to provide common data collection standards, upload and download of relevant data and hands-on GIS practice for the stewards. This presentation will discuss the stewardship program components and preliminary results.
