Abstract
ArcView and ArcEditor Help Arizona Farmers Manage Groundwater Track: Water Resources Author(s): Walt Austin The state of Arizona's Department of Water Resources is in the third year of a pilot program designed to help farmers located in AMAs make the best use of groundwater. Maps of participants' farms have had to be created using base layers of aerial images, grandfather water rights, and farm field boundaries. Direct field observations are then made to add features, such as wells, turnouts, CLDs, field flow direction, sumps, pumps, pipes, and farm equipment, to the maps. Maps help track farmers' water management practices. Those who demonstrate good water conservation practices are given greater latitude in the types of crops they can grow and the amount of water they are allowed to use. Esri ArcView and ArcEditor are employed to generate the maps. This discussion will show the steps needed for creating the customized maps used in this program.
