Study of Cloud Modification for Artificial Rainfall by GIS
Track: Climate, Weather and Atmosphere
Author(s): Kamran Ahmad, Tehsin Ahmad, Sheraz Saddique

The present research is concerned with the augmentation of precipitation through artificial seeding of clouds during drought conditions in Pakistan. Because of the country's vulnerability to drought, such measures of making water available are imperative. Geographically referenced agroclimatic maps were used to demarcate the drought-affected and drought-prone regions on which cloud types were to be studied for effective cloud seeding to obtain the desired results. The thematic layers of agroclimatic zones and arid and semiarid areas were developed using geospatial techniques to see the distribution of such areas throughout the country. Precipitation data spanning three decades, 1960-90, acquired from 30 cm, 60 cm, and 90 cm RADAR, was also used to study and analyze the cloud systems over Pakistan. It was found that by combining geospatial techniques with the climate data, suitable areas could be identified for cloud seeding experiments with favorable success rates.
