Abstract
Vegetation or Economics: Which Is More important? Track: Environmental Management Author(s): Melanie Salyer Coal mining is a large industry in Wise County, Virginia. To mine for coal, it is necessary to alter the vegetation of the land. While there are regulations requiring the reclamation of the land upon mining, remotely sensed imagery will indicate the percent change of vegetation before and after the reclamation. While coal mining alters the land, it is essential for economic development in many parts of the country. Unemployment statistics and population ratios will show the impact of coal mining on Wise County. The question to be pondered is Which is more important, vegetation or economics?
