Abstract
Migrating to ArcGIS Server Track: Transportation Author(s): Teague Buchanan The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), in partnership with Esri Professional Services is migrating the functionality of Transportation Explorer, an Esri ArcIMS application, to ArcGIS Server. This paper describes the migration process, lessons learned, and future opportunities. The migration is expected to transform both the use of GIS within software development and accelerate the automation of GDOT's business workflows. With this migration GDOT is targeting the use of Web services to facilitate service-oriented architecture. Web services are being designed for consumption by programmers thus decentralizing the role of GIS professionals in application development. Additionally, these services will be published externally for software integration with public and private sectors. Principally, business units will benefit from the workflow integration of geography. Business automation is limited without the integration of location, mapping, and spatial analysis. Disconnected and isolated operations are expected to transform into seamless workflow processes.
