Hierarchical Typology of North Pacific Rivers and Wild Salmon Conservation
Track: Ecology and Conservation
Author(s): Niels Maumenee

A lack of an objective way of prioritizing rivers of the North Pacific Rim (NPR) is substantially hampering wild salmon conservation. The University of Montana Flathead Lake Biological Station, in cooperation with The Moore Foundation, Ecotrust, JPL and Montana State University, is developing a decision support system that uses a hierarchical typology of NPR rivers to categorize areas of importance for conservation across the NPR. The goal of this work is to produce a decision support system that will assist salmon conservation across the NPR, based on a robust classification (typology) of rivers and river habitats. The typology project utilizes Esri GIS technology to classify, organize, analyze and serve data.
