Mapping the Historical Distribution of Wetlands in Southern California
Track: Ecology and Conservation
Author(s): Shawna Dark, Eric Stein, Robin Grossinger, Travis Longcore

Historical data represents a largely untapped resource for wetland restoration and management. In the absence of this historical perspective, policies and prescriptions for the restoration of wetlands can only reflect information about disturbed and artificial wetlands. For this presentation I will present how GIS, historical aerial photos (1920s), and digitally referenced Spanish land grant maps from the mid-1800s are being used to reconstruct the historical extent of wetlands in the San Gabriel River Watershed of southern California.
